I guess Gumbel couldn't be bothered to go to Tennessee, so your announcer is something called Spiro Dedes... hey, Marshall Faulk's on color! Woo hoo!
And Vince Young has been suspended by Jeff Fisher tonight for breaking an "unspecified team rule". Making it rain? Biting a bouncer on the ankle? Appearing on the cover of Madden 2008? Is this suspension a really big deal when VY probably would have played all of six plays anyway?
Redskins open with Jason Campbell at QB and Ladell Betts at RB; Clinton Portis won't play. Campbell slings a pretty pass to Randel-El for 20 to get Washington across midfield. Titans are stuffing the run, though, and now here's Vince Fuller coming in untouched on a CB blitz and hammering Campbell to force a fumble.
For Tennessee, it's Kerry Collins starting at QB, Chris Brown at RB. Tennessee's first drive blows up with Kendrick Gholston deflecting a pass that London Fletcher really should have intercepted, and Collins fumbling a snap for a big loss. Craig Hentrich pins the Skins at the 5 with his punt, though.
Unfortunately, Eric King ran out of bounds and was the first man to touch the ball, handing the Redskins the ball at the 20 instead. No matter; the Titans are playing some dominating defense. They hold Betts to 1 yard on 2 rushes, then Tony Brown stunts around right tackle untouched and creams Campbell for another sack/fumble. Washington recovers, but Cortland Finnegan returns the punt 37 yards to put the Titans in excellent field position.
Lovely drive by the Titans. Brown 1 yard; Collins throws a screen into the ground when Washington blows up the play; Collins hit on 3rd down and throws another poor pass. Lucky they started the drive in scoring range. Rob Bironas puts Tennessee up 3-0.
The great Rock Cartwright takes over at tailback for Washington. Campbell stays in; will he get killed for the third straight drive? Beautiful touch on a 39-yard go route to Santana Moss. Tennessee shuts them down from there, though, and Shaun Suisham doinks the FG attempt, keeping the Titans up 3.
Collins hits Brandon Jones across midfield to close out the first quarter.
Titans drive to the Redskin 20 and make an interesting maneuver. On 4th-and-2, they go into hurry-up offense. Lendale White busts off an 8-yard run for the first down. Nice twist by Fisher and company. The Redskins then stuff White twice, though, and Eric Moulds drops a quick screen to force a FG attempt. Now I know why Fisher went for it on 4th down the first time; John Vaughn's 26-yard FG attempt is simply awful. Still 3-0.
Wow, Campbell is still in. Cartwright gains 7 on two rushes but Campbell misses connections with Mike Espy on 3rd down. Skins punt again. Huge punt by Frost, with good coverage this time, as Finnegan loses yardage.
Collins still in for Titans. Refs miss an obvious facemasak penalty by Rocky McIntosh on 2nd down, and Fletcher stuffs a 3rd down run to force a Titan punt. Both run defenses are really standing on their heads tonight.
Tennessee stuffs Derrick Blaylock for a big loss, and Eric King makes a nice pass defense to force yet another Redskin punt. Everybody's hitting tonight; Frost the punter gets downfield and thwacks Finnegan to jar the ball loose, but it rolls out of bounds. 2:00 warning.
Redskins continue to stop the run, and with Collins' pass to Bo Scaife short of the first, yep, it's another punt. This half should provide some interesting defensive statistics.
Campbell gets flushed on 1st down and throws it away. Chris Samuels didn't suit up tonight, and it's showing. Campbell's been running for his life all night. Antwan Odom hooks his arm on 2nd down to force an incompletion. 3rd down pass to Blaylock is short. Waiter! Another punt over here, please!
Tennessee goes to no-huddle the last 1:05; watch, it'll be the only time they move the ball all night. Collins hasn't succeeded at much tonight besides throwing to Scaife and throwing the ball away to get out of trouble. He does the latter twice, forcing another punt and drawing boos from the home crowd. Washington runs a couple plays, getting nowhere, of course. Tennessee 3-0 at halftime.
At halftime, the Titans have 38 rushing yards, the Redskins 34. Total yards are 138 to 117 in Washington's favor.
Boy, Suisham's having a GREAT night, yanking the 2nd half kickoff out of bounds. Tim Rattay at QB for Tennessee. He's a lot smaller than I recalled. The Corrente crew catches a Redskin facemasking this time. They're really handing the Titans great field position. Chris Henry in at RB. Titans still don't do anything with the great field position, as a terrible shotgun snap by Leroy Harris gets Rattay sacked on third down.
The things you learn in preseason. Like, Mark Brunell's still in the league? Mike Espy can't handle Brunell's 3rd-and-5 pass, and the Redskins will be punting. AGAIN.
Rattay way overthrows Paul Williams on 3rd down, and guess what? Another punt. What was the over/under for this game, 10? And I'm leaning toward the under.
Spirochete just said that Brunell's "trying to jump-start the Redskin offense". No, he's trying to defibrillate it. Clear! Actually, I think both offenses were DOA tonight. Halfway through the 3rd quarter, Tennessee has 8 first downs; Washington has 6.
First down ho! Washington just got #7, Brunell to Todd Yoder. That'll be it for Washington, says Titans DE Sean Conover, who whips Calvin Anderson to sack Brunell.
Chris Henry's the first RB to show a pulse tonight. He's got some wiggle and doesn't seem to take long to get up to full speed. Averaging 5.0 a carry so far. Bah, I jinxed him. Redskins stuff him well behind the line on third and short to force. Another. Punt.
We hit the 4th quarter with 3 total points. Viva preseason!
Jesse Mahelona sacks Brunell at midfield for Tennessee's 4th sack of the night, forcing Washington's seventh punt of the night.
Titans are all of a sudden putting a drive together, after being pinned at their own 4. Rattay hits former Mizzou WR Justin Gage and TE Casey Cramer for 25 yards apiece. He can't connect with Paul Williams on 3rd down from the Redskin 21, however, so it's left to Vaughn to double the Titans' lead. 6-0!
Marcus Mason now at tailback for Washington. He barely escapes a penetrating DT to convert a 3rd-and-1. But Titans German import Ullrich Winkler gets blocked into Brunell for the 5th Titan sack. Which is natural, who knows more about pillaging and sacking than Germans? OK, besides Vikings. Brunell has been around WAY too long not to get rid of that ball sooner, btw.
Shouldn't a defensive play always be considered a blitz if a German native is involved?
VERY weak 3-and-out by Tennessee returns the ball to Washington with 4:16 left. Todd Collins enters the game and gets the Redskin offense moving for the first time. The key play was a sweet touch pass to TE Eric Edwards for 29. Mason dives into the end zone with 1:14 left to give Washington its first score, and lead, of the evening. 7-6, Redskins.
Suddenly the Redskins are a quick-strike scoring machine. Another awful shotgun snap from Harris becomes a Redskin TD when Rattay can't corral it (a Redskin tackled him) and Daniel Loper Keystone Kops it into the end zone trying to fall on it. Byron Westbrook falls on it to score Washington's second TD in the last 30 seconds. 14-6, Redskins, which ends up the final score.
Both teams can obviously be happy with their defensive performances, the defensive lines in particular. Sean Conover and Tony Brown stood out for Tennessee. The main thing that stood out about Washington was the terrible QB'ing of Campbell and Brunell, and the fact that their offensive line was a sieve without Chris Samuels. They also played without Clinton Portis (tendinitis). Tennessee played without Vince Young (team suspension) and still have major offensive questions to answer. No one really stepped forward as a lead RB; rookie Chris Henry came closest. They're also still very questionable at WR. If you're playing against Tennessee this year, you should put first emphasis on covering the tight end.
6 down, 59 to go. Up next: Chicago @ Houston on NFL Network in about 15 minutes.
