Game 18: Falcons 20, Rams 13

Wait a minute, haven't I skipped ahead a little bit? Yes; maybe some other year I'll make it my goal to watch all the games in order. This has been a more hectic-than-expected week, so I didn't make any progress with week 1 past the first 8 games. Still have all of them on DVD, though. I thought it would be more valuable to stay up to date and watch as many live games as possible instead of stacking up another big pile of discs, so I'm jumping to week 2, while still vowing to see all of week 1. And 3. And 4.

Meanwhile, here's RamView's recap of Friday night's Falcons-Rams game:
RamView, 8/21/2009: Falcons 20, Rams 13

MVP: For sentimental reasons, I'm picking Falcons starting center Brett Romberg. Michael Turner and Matt Ryan were both certainly worthy of game balls, but the Falcon line, coached by Rams throwaway Paul Boudreaux, was really a strength for them tonight, anchored as it was by supposedly too-small-to-play-center Romberg. The Falcons erased the middle of a Ram line that had played quite well the week before.

What did we learn: Atlanta's loaded and ready to go. Turner's in top form, Ryan had a spotless night, White doesn't show any ill effects or chemistry from holding out of camp, an o-line that was always a weakness there looks like a strength, and Tony Gonzalez is still unstoppable. Mike Mularkey has this offense coached extremely well. And they stuffed the run on defense. This should be a formidable team if it stays healthy. For the Rams, rust or not, we saw Boller's quite a step down from Bulger. Laurent Robinson's proving to be a real find. The top draft picks are hanging in there. But it's obvious the work of improving the run defense, pass rush and transforming the offense into an effective ground-and-pound unit still has a long way to go.

Up next: NFL Network doubleheader Saturday night, starting with Steelers-Redskins.
